The previous OS X installer was just installing the game under Rosetta (visualized classic MacOS). The old versions of Diablo 2 stopped working till now because Blizzard stopped supporting Rosetta in 10.7. Blizzard finally decided to update the game for OS X proper so it can be played naively in OS X now. Also note that you can not install the game from disc to OS X. You need to download the installer and install it digitally.
